Raymond Weil Freelancer: New Horizons

The early ’90s marked a significant turning point for RAYMOND WEIL with the launch of the Parsifal collection. This collection seamlessly blended complications, premium materials, meticulous artistry, and innovative designs. 

Tango, another mind-blowing collection, combines functionality with aesthetics. Tradition, with its classic and refined style, embodies watchmaking heritage in its purest form. The brand’s devotion to the arts was further solidified with the award-winning Precision Movements advertising campaign in 1994. This one featured dancers suspended in mid-air.

RAYMOND WEIL introduced the Freelancer collection in 2007. It honored the free-spirited Swiss men and women who wanted control over their destiny. There are now over 40 references, including chronographs, world timers, and diver’s watches. In 2017, the brand revealed its inaugural manufacturing caliber, the self-winding RW 1212, breathing new life into several Freelancer models, some of which were presented as skeletonized versions.

Embracing the Square

While RAYMOND WEIL explored many watch shapes over the years. Moreover, the Freelancer collection had always adhered to round cases. Yet, the latest additions to the Freelancer series introduce square cushion-shaped cases. These are powered by the proprietary RW 1212 caliber. With a modern ’70s-inspired aesthetic, the Freelancer 2790 is housed in a 40mm x 40mm square stainless steel case. The fluted screw-down crown, featuring the distinctive RW logo, promises ease of use. The sapphire crystal, with double-sided AR coating, reveals a multi-level dial with gradient blue or green options. Minutes are marked by nickel-plated baton-shaped indices and a softer color towards the center. This looks amazing!

The central round space adds a touch of class. In this time-only model, Super-LumiNova accents the two nickel-plated hands and indices, ensuring excellent visibility. As with all RW 1212-equipped watches, these new Raymond Weil timepieces showcase an open balance wheel at 6 o’clock. Clearly, this serves as a captivating visual feature and a running indicator.

The RW 1212 Movement – A Marvel of Precision

Its name derives from the postal code of Raymond Weil’s headquarters in Grand-Lancy, Canton of Geneva. A 27-jewel movement with Incabloc shock protection and an Etachron-type regulator operates at 28,800 vph. Based on the RW 1842 tourbillon movement from 2015, it reveals the oscillating balance wheel through the dial. 

A symmetrical window placement is admirable, despite the open-heart concept. It brings the escapement closer to the dial for easy observation by the wearer. This is thanks to the prominent bridge over the regulation system.

A Glimpse into Craftsmanship

Turning the watch over, you’ll find a transparent case back showing the well-finished side of the RW 1212 caliber.

An open-worked W-shaped ball-bearing rotor keeps the watch running continuously for 38 hours when fully wound.

Raymond Weil has introduced four Freelancer references in the new square case, featuring blue or green dials. They are available on a jubilee-style steel bracelet or a genuine black or green calf leather strap, secured with a stainless steel clasp employing a double push-security system.
